To start with, look out before you buy your cutlery .stainless-steel cutlery is made from an alloy of iron and other metals. Ask the shopkeeper whether it’s the 18/0 or the 18/10 variety (18 refers to the percentage of chromium in the alloy –it’s the chromium content which helps cutlery resist corrosion and staining). Since it has less corrosion, 18/0 is much cheaper than 18/10, but it’s more likely to stain and corrode.
Silver is also a good choice for cutlery since this relatively inert material does not react to most foods, and is naturally resistant to staining and corrosion. Though expensive, it’s durable and can be passed on as an heirloom to future generations. The only disadvantage-you need to use silver polish regularly since it tarnishes quickly.
