About Taipei
Taipei City
With a population of 2.6 million and covering an area of 271.77 square kilometers, Taipei is situated in a basin, and is the political, economic, educational, and recreational center of the island. The area was originally inhabited by aboriginals until 1709 when immigrants from China came to establish a settlement. Now, after nearly 300 years, the city proudly stands as one of the most important cities in Asia.

The eastern section of Taipei has been developed into a financial and commercial district since the 1970s. The Taipei World Trade Center, where international fairs take place throughout the year, has contributed greatly to the promotion of trade worldwide.

Taipei is a center of art and culture rich in traditional architecture and folk art. The National Palace Museum houses the greatest collection of Chinese art in the world. Other points of interest include Yangmingshan National Park, Taipei Astronomical Museum, Taipei Zoo, and numerous historical sites and night markets. With thousands of restaurants and eateries serving all kinds of delicacies from Peking duck to steamed dumplings, Taipei is also famed as the gourmet capital of Asia.
